Going to school at forensic science colleges in Florida is a possibility for many students who are looking to get into the field. The state is already home to a large number of forensic science professionals, and it may be possible to find work in a range of places including laboratories and police departments.
Forensic Science Training in Florida
The state has a number of different schools that are able to offer programs that will help students achieve an education in forensic science. The following are some of the popular schools in the state.
Miami Dade College in Miami offers an associate of science degree specifically in forensic science as well as an Associate of Science in Criminal Justice Technology with an emphasis on crime scene technology. Either of these could be useful to graduates of forensics colleges in Florida who are looking for entry-level positions in the criminalistics field.
Tallahassee Community College provides a number of criminal justice degree options to those in interested in the broader field. Its Associate of Science degree in Criminal Justice Technology, for example, takes a multi-disciplinary approach and is intended for those who want to work in the criminal justice field.
Argosy University, with campuses both in Sarasota and Tampa, offers associate and bachelor’s degrees in criminal justice at both of its campuses. These degrees are more broad in focus than just forensic science and may help to prepare students to look for a variety of criminal justice jobs.
Another one of the popular options for forensic science colleges in Florida is Florida International University. For students obtaining a bachelor’s of science degree in a natural science, the school offers a forensic science certificate through the International Forensic Research Institute. Students interested in furthering their education could pursue FIU’s Master’s of Science degree in Forensic Science.
Forensic Science Requirements in Florida
A Bachelor of Science in Forensic Science, which is designed for students seeking careers in forensic science laboratories, is a mix of biological sciences, physics and chemistry, as well as criminal justice and the law.

Master of Science in Forensic Science
A Master of Science in Forensic Science is designed to provide students with an opportunity to specialize in the field of forensic science in such areas as drug analysis, DNA analysis, criminalistics, and legal issues.
Core coursework often includes the following:

- Principles of Forensic Science
- Forensic Toxicology
- Advanced Criminalistics
- Environmental Forensics
- Metabolic Biochemistry
- Toxic Substances
- Forensic Entomology
Students in these programs may choose a number of tracks, or concentrations, such as: Forensic Biology, Forensic Chemistry, Forensic Physical Evidence, and Toxicology.
Becoming a forensic scientist in Florida involves study through forensic science colleges offering both undergraduate and graduate programs. Florida is home to some of the most comprehensive forensics programs in the nation.
Forensic technologists and forensic scientists who work at the FDLE must possess, at a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in physical, biological, or forensic science. Further, candidates for these jobs must have completed at least 20 credit hours in physical or biological science with a “C” or better. Candidates must have a “C” or better in at least two of the three subject areas:
- Biochemistry
- Genetics
- Molecular Biology
All candidates for forensic scientist jobs in Florida must submit to drug testing and a background investigation, including a financial background check.
Forensic Science Salary in Florida
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides information that shows that Florida is one of the best states in the country to look for forensic science jobs:
- It has the second highest level of employment of any state in the country.
- Based on the number of forensic science positions per employee, it has the fourth highest concentration of jobs in the country.
In particular, two cities in Florida have the highest concentration of forensic scientist jobs of any metropolitan area in the country. Tallahassee has a sizable number of forensic scientists employed there. It had twice as many jobs per 1000 employees as the city with the second greatest concentration of jobs. Pensacola had the fifth greatest concentration of jobs.
According to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, the number of these jobs is increasing each year with 1.84% annual growth projected in the period from 2012 to 2020. They project that 86 jobs a year will be created in Florida during this time frame.
The annual mean salary of forensic science technicians in Florida was $46,850 a year in 2012 according to the BLS. Experienced scientists in the top tenth percent of the wage bracket averaged $69,800 a year.
In addition to forensic scientists who work as lab technicians, a number of these professionals work in the field analyzing and collecting evidence from crime scenes. These crime scene investigators (CSIs) can be either sworn officers or civilians.
